The Bason Botanic Gardens (25 hectares) are on the outskirts of Whanganui, on the road to Kai Iwi beach. The gardens were donated by Stanley and Blanche Bason in 1969 and are maintained by Whanganui District Council. They are free to visit at any time of the year.
These unique gardens offer a wide range of passive and active features suitable for all ages and interests.
There are eight different areas within the gardens, each with their own unique features.
There is something for everyone to enjoy; from winding paths through the native bush area, picnics by the lake, the daffodils in spring, the flowers in the homestead gardens, the exotic orchids in the conservatories to specimen plants for the connoisseur.
The gardens are part of the Coastal Arts Trail and feature several large sculptures.
The authentic Japanese tea house sits in its own landscaped area and the Boothby Fern house showcases a range of native ferns.
The gardens are an ideal location for a wide range of activities. Whether it’s a leisurely drive around, walking the many paths, keep fit, disc golf or geocaching there is something for the whole family to enjoy. To top it all off there are numerous picnic opportunities with gas-fired barbecues in several places (free of charge).
The Bason Botanic Gardens Trust produces a Shakespeare play every other year.
The gardens also lend themselves for events organised by the public, such as weddings, corporate outings and club barbecues.
The opportunities for the gardens to be used for educational purposes are many and varied.
